Each movement at a synovial joint results from the contraction or relaxation of the muscles that are attached to the bones on either side of the articulation. These are the only movements available at the ankle joint see Figure 9.

Biomechanics is part of the larger field of kinesiology, specifically focusing on the mechanics of the movement. By examining sport skills you can determine the individual anatomical movements of which the skill is composed of and furthermore evaluate the influence the individual movement has on the overall success of the skill.
